She’s bright, intuitive and an inspiration! Sue Joseph is a woman in business who makes things happen and nothing gets in the way of bringing her ideas to fruition.

Sue is the managing director and owner of Bassett Barks, a well known and respected landscaping and potting media supply company. She single handedly manages a team of 28 staff at their 100 acre facility.

Sue originally started out as a sales representative when the business was trading as ‘Ron Bassett’s Pine Bark Supply’ back in the late 80’s. Then in 1995, Hyne and Son bought into the company and then it became known as Bassett Barks. In early 1998, Sue rose to managing director of Bassett Barks and it’s stayed that way ever since. Then over a number of years and through a natural progression, she bought the  company in 2009.

With a natural business intuition, an ability to work hard, coupled with a belief in herself and an ability to connect with others, Sue is a formidable force in the industry. “I had some really good teachers and some of the toughest that you’d ever wish to work with. I really had to perform and if I didn’t perform, I didn’t have a job,” she says.

Sue’s passions: Sue says it was always her dream to create a company which supplied ‘clean and green’ products with a strong ethical base. This is exactly what she has created and she is a model for other business people.

“I don’t find out what our competitors are doing, we don’t get into price wars or ‘down’ our competitors. If the competition is growing, that means we’re going to grow too,” she says.

She believes in her industry, things will continue to flourish because people are starting to get back to basics and work on their own backyards at home with the family. Although, she feels that the next 18 months will be a consolidation time  generally for people in business.
Sue’s business tips: Sue starts the day feeling grateful for what she has and then she’s very aware of her thoughts and how they can manifest in the business world. She says the minute you start thinking “things are bad” then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy in business and in life.  In the last five years, she’s learnt to employ people with a similar energy that resonate with her ethos. She says the key is to find staff who are passionate about the work they do and have a strong work ethic.

She says most of all, “Be around people who are positive, who have passion and ethics and are sincere. So that becomes the culture. As a businessowner you have to stick to what you believe and what you think is right for your company. And really stand by it even in the challenging times.”
