When people ask me what went wrong in my first marriage there are a lot of very valid answers I could give. But the bottom line is – my well ran dry!
We all have a well and often more than one that we constantly dip into to meet the needs in our lives. However if your well is not being refilled, if it is constantly being emptied, the danger is that one day it may suddenly run dry.
When it comes to refilling your well, only you can know what level it is at and how best to fill it. Quite often in our hectic schedules, we become very insular in our lifestyles, we run around like hamsters on a wheel, not knowing why! Sometimes it pays to get off the wheel, take a breather and look around. So what does this have to do with filling your well? It begins the awareness that your own daily existence is not the only reality. It also highlights that where you are now is not necessarily where you will stay. Remember the world is full of endless possibilities.
I am not advocating packing your bags and saying “It’s my way or the highway.” I am saying- take some time to reconnect with yourself, think about what would fill your well and if in fact it is in danger of running dry. You will be no good to anyone if it does. And it doesn’t have to be huge, begin with baby steps.
So...
• Play some of ‘your’ music
• Connect with a friend that really
understands you
• Think of something you do where you totally lose track of time
• Keep a grateful journal so you focus on the positives in your life
• Make a regular time to do something that is really you
• Make a bucket list – things you want to achieve before you kick the bucket
• Think of passions and hobbies you had when you were younger
• Volunteer to help out – when we give, we also receive
• Laugh more – research shows that the average adult laughs 15 times a day, the average child 400 times a day
I often think of Karen Gatt who began her 67kg weight loss by walking around her clothesline in the backyard. Talk about baby steps and filling your own well.
