Summer Bliss with Sugarless Wines!

A glass of fine wine that is low in calories and doesn’t end in a hangover sounds too good to be true - but it’s here according
to medical researcher Laura Adams. In fact, you could almost justify a tipple of the South American Vinos de la Cruz wines – red, white or sparkling - as being good for you in moderation.

They’re sugar free, preservative free, organic and low GI with 1.8 grams of carbohydrates and 90 calories a glass, but with an alcohol content of 11.5 per cent.

Laura Adams was researching insulin protocols for Melbourne’s Monash University, when she stumbled across the range of Uruguayan wines under “diabetico” surfing the web. “My father was a diabetic and I was working in intensive care doing cardiac arrest clinical trials when I came across the website and had to get it translated from the Spanish,” she said. “It turned out I had found the only winery in the world that produces sugarless organic wines certified for people with diabetes.” Ms Adams had the wines analysed in an Australian laboratory and found they stacked up on the claims as a healthy alternative for diabetics, cardio-vascular patients and even cancer patients who need to avoid sugar. “For people with these conditions, not being able to have a drink can seriously affect their quality of life. A lot will have a drink anyway, but this gives them a better alternative,” she said. “These wines are a godsend, especially to diabetics.” The grapes grow low to the ground and
sugar is consumed during fermentation.

The wines were presented at the International Diabetes Congress in 2004 and Ms Adams has now become the exclusive Australia and New Zealand distributor, attracting the interest of Weight Watchers and the Heart Foundation.

Described as a “fine blended European tasting wine”, they are also good for the palate and have been picked up by the
sommeliers at such establishments as Palazzo Versace, Sheraton Mirage in Port Douglas and Sails in Noosa.

“The antioxidants in red wine can be good for your health, especially if you have high blood pressure, so this is a very healthy alternative,” Ms Adams said.

Her introduction of sugarless organic wine to the Australian market has seen Ms Adams recently become a finalist in the  New York International Women in Business Awards for  best new product category.
