Supportive and Stylish By Irene O’Duffy
Do you fidget with your bra during the day because it’s uncomfortable? Many women do because they’re wearing bras that may be too tight, too loose, unsupportive or the wrong cup size. The comfort women receive when wearing a properly-fitting bra influences much of day-to-day life: clothes fit better, your posture is better, and you feel better overall. Women often ask if underwire bras are bad for breast health. There seems to be no conclusive proof either for or against under-wired bras for women who don’t have medical issues. However, when pregnant, breast-feeding, undergoing or recovering from breast treatment, it is always best to wear a wire-free bra to avoid pressure on the breast area. The quest is to find that elusive, comfortable bra! As long as a bra fits you well and is comfortable, it is a personal preference as to whether you prefer wires or not. If under-wired bras make you uncomfortable, try changing to a wire-free bra. But how easy it is to find a well-fitting bra? What if you don’t have access to a store that does fittings? Is it possible to fit yourself at your local bra shop?
Here are some tips to help you find a bra that’s right for you.
1. Position: Your bust should sit approximately halfway between your shoulder and elbow. Don’t pull your breasts up to an un-natural position. That may put strain on your shoulders.
2. Adjust your straps: If your breasts sit too low, you need to tighten your straps.
Over time, bra straps lose their stretch and you may need to adjust them
more often.
3. Make sure breasts fit within the cups: The cups should be large enough to prevent spilling or bulging over the top. But if there is puckering or excess fabric in the cups, they’re too big. When trying on bras, realise that you may need a different cup size than you’ve had previously.
4. The midriff band should stay horizontal: A correctly sized band should sit firm and snug, but not feel tight. It should feel comfortable when standing or sitting.
If the back rides up, or your breasts fall out of the bottom of the cups, the bra is too big.
