FEBRUARY 2011 - Editorial

My heart goes out to all the people who are putting the pieces of their lives back together right now. After working as a psychologist for many years and assisting and supporting people after natural disasters, I know the impact it can have on an individual, a family and the community. It’s often the weeks and months after, where the loss will be fully felt and realised. Even if we weren’t directly in the floodwaters path, we can be affected by what is happening around us and the images we see
in the media.

Sometimes our hearts are so full with empathy, we can at times ‘shut off’ in response to trauma. So self care is very important and when we have recovered ourselves, we can truly help others.

Never underestimate the ‘power of listening’ and the human capacity to process emotion and heal. We can do so much as a community to understand and respect these processes. When I was helping out during the clean up, I experienced the spirit of the community directly….people’s hearts were open….. it wasn’t just a media cliché….I felt it and so did many others….wouldn’t it be wonderful if this compassion continued to flow, creating an energetic embrace and comforting those who feel loss and despair?

Brandon Bays (on the cover) is one lady who has a lot of love to give the world. She survived her own natural disaster many years ago which ravaged her community and destroyed her home. This month she talks about the potential for transformation and the calling more people are receiving to heal their own lives.

There has never been a more important time to focus on our inner work and resources and forge a new way ahead; seeing ourselves and the world with ‘fresh eyes’.

We print on carbon neutral paper and use soy based inks and a local Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified commercial printer.
