The Magic of Neem
It’s not new that chemicals and preservatives are making our animals sick, but finding safe and effective alternatives can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Beverly & Leigh Barkway from Naturapetics based on the Sunshine Coast, believe they have changed all that.
Beverly Barkway and her husband Leigh Barkway, horticulturist (yes, that is definitely their last name and not a pseudonym) began making all natural products for animals after Beverly’s first encounter with the ubiquitous Queensland midge. Beverly says she was more than prepared for Queensland’s infamously large cockroaches and poisonous cane toads when they first moved to the Sunshine Coast four years ago, but she had no understanding of the tiniest of our biting insects, the midge.
Her search to find herself a ‘cure’ for the insane itch and consequent skin eruption caused by these flying no-see-ums, resulted in the birth of an entire industry to care for animals using Neem Seed Oil as the base product. As a natural medicine practitioner and first hand ‘guinea-pig’, it didn’t take much of a leap of faith for Beverly to realise that what works on humans, works equally wonderfully
on animals.
Nature always knows best!
Beverly says, “I had no idea when I first started working with animals how much time I would spend dealing with dogs whose skin has become their biggest issue. Not just scratching and itching, but rashes and infestations that cause intense frustration and a hopeless despair that keeps their owners taking them back and forth to the vets and often with little or no relief. So what is the alternative? The answers are much simpler than you think.”
Beverly remarks that skin conditions, eruptions, allergies and flea infestations are four of the most common conditions, causing concern for pets and their owners today. The usual round of veterinary treatment is a course of cortisone cream or toxic flea washes to be applied with rubber gloves! If you are required to wear rubber gloves to apply, what might it be doing to your animal? Unfortunately, once treatment ceases, the conditions usually return with a vengeance. The reason behind this seemingly perplexing phenomena is simply the underlying cause has not been addressed.
Beverly believes that internally, these allergies and infestations are stemming from an overloaded liver as a result of the daily onslaught of chemicals hidden in medications and food, and lack of nutrition from processed dog foods. Going back to basics is the vital key – reduce toxicity and increase nutrition to bring about happy pets – naturally.
Beverly & Leigh can be seen every Wednesday and Saturday at the Eumundi markets where they happily promote the powerful benefits of neem and give sound and simple, dietary advice along with homeopathic remedies to rebalance emotional issues.
