The Legacy Of A Footprint

Have you seen the footprint of a whale?
This is the area of water that is left with a distinct pattern after the whale has submerged. These patterns can be seen for quiet some time and signal to an onlooker where the whales have been, many minutes after they have disappeared from site. I witnessed this recently and it made me ponder the footprints we leave in life.

Our footprints are the lasting impressions that indicate where we have been, the pattern of our presence long after we have moved away from people, careers, schools and places.

Our footsteps are the daily movements that propel and project us through this journey called life. These have impacts, however to me, the footprints show others where we have been and have an eternal effect on our spirit.

We never really know the impact we have on anyone we encounter, no matter how fleeting or enduring the interaction is. It is so important to be present to whoever you are with, and be in integrity as this is an honouring of that moment in time for all concerned.

Our words, energy, attention, body language all reveal so much of what is really going on behind the mask. You can always tell when you are with a person who just is not there with you, is preoccupied, even dismissive... that is the footprint that they leave in your life.

Now look at the footprint of a person who is present, listening, hearing, observing and interacting their input will be enduring and in many cases, can create an opportunity for the person they are with to alter something in their way of life, or even the receiving of a ‘seed’ or an idea that will bear fruit later.

This is where we never really know how important we are to others.

One of the things close to my heart is the series of footprints that we leave in our children. Our beautiful children, these pure young souls full of innocence, open heartedness and trust can be left permanently marked and how many years does it take as an adult to erase some of the footprints that have left wounds, negative self images and emotional baggage?

We are all covered in footprints, some inspiring, some challenging, painful, some so uplifting that we are in bliss, however the marks that we leave are the important ones. Let us be present, allow us to be conscious to the full effect that we have on each moment in life and all we interact with, so that the footprints that we leave are of value, represent our essence and are ones that we would be honoured with, if they were left on us.
